Abstract

Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important vegetable and spice crop cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Its production is affected by several insect and mite pests that damage leaves, flowers, buds, shoots and fruits, resulting in reduced yield and market quality. The major insect pests of chilli include thrips, aphids, whiteflies, broad mites, fruit borers, tobacco caterpillars, leaf-feeding caterpillars, cutworms and leaf miners. Among these, thrips, aphids and whiteflies are particularly important because they cause direct feeding damage and may transmit plant viruses. Fruit borers and caterpillars cause substantial damage to reproductive and vegetative parts. Integrated pest management (IPM), combining cultural practices, field monitoring, biological control, mechanical methods and judicious pesticide use, is essential for sustainable chilli production. This chapter describes the identification, biology, nature of damage and management of the major insect pests of chilli.
