Abstract

Sunflower is one of the major oilseed crops grown in India. Its valuable benefits include edible oil, feed purpose and provides raw material for agro-based industry. sunflower oil has good keeping quality, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and prevents heart diseases. In India, sunflower is cultivated under the area of 0.228 m ha with production of 0.212 mt and productivity of 0.93 t/ha. Due to its large area of cultivation, production of high-quality seed is required to fulfill the seed demand. Seed production in sunflower is successful, due to its wide adaptability, suitability for major seasons, soil types, wide spread growing regions and availability of promising varieties. Cultivation of hybrid sunflower is increasing due to evolving hybrid lines released by both public and private sectors. With the development of high yielding varieties, adoption of proper seed production techniques and agronomic practices can elevate the seed yield.
