Abstract

The Plant Membrane Transporters are special proteins embedded in the cell organelles. Which primarily focuses on refinement in nutrition and water uptake by plants. During the different phases of plant growth, different transporter proteins get activated and synchronise the assimilation process. Globally, the crop health and yield are determined by factors such as Water, temperature, soil properties, pathogens and pests. Fluctuations or abnormalities in these factors cause biotic and abiotic stress in plants, which eventually affect crop health.  To mitigate such health and yield loss, plants have vital mechanisms to regulate biotic and abiotic stressors via plant membrane transporters. These membrane transporters take part in requisite role to regulating cell homeostasis, nutrient and water uptake and photosynthate assimilation in plants. The knowledge of how plant stress tolerance and membrane transporter’s function will help in the development of breeding programs that adapt to different kinds of stimuli. This chapter discuss about various membrane transporter families (SWEET, SUT, AAT, MST, APC, AAAP, MATE, NRT & PUP) and the ways that these transporters increase nutrient and stress tolerance in plants.
