Mungbean (Vigna radiata) and urdbean (Vigna mungo) are important pulse crops widely cultivated in India and other Asian countries due to their high protein content, short growth duration, adaptability, and suitability for diverse cropping systems. Besides contributing to food and nutritional security, they improve soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation and are extensively used in intercropping and rice-fallow systems. Both crops originated in the Indian subcontinent and belong to the family Fabaceae. They are self-pollinated diploid species (2n = 22) with seeds containing 22–28% protein along with essential carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and bioactive compounds. Conserved germplasm and wild relatives provide valuable genetic resources for improving resistance to diseases, insect pests, and abiotic stresses. Breeding efforts focus on developing high-yielding, early-maturing, climate-resilient cultivars with improved nutritional quality, desirable plant architecture, lodging and pod shattering resistance, and suitability for mechanized harvesting. Major breeding targets include resistance to yellow mosaic disease, powdery mildew, Cercospora leaf spot, anthracnose, bruchids, stem fly, and tolerance to drought, heat, salinity, cold, and waterlogging. Recent advances in genomics, molecular breeding, marker-assisted selection, genome-wide association studies, genomic selection, CRISPR/Cas genome editing, and high-throughput phenotyping have accelerated crop improvement. Integrating these approaches with conventional breeding will facilitate the development of high-yielding, nutritionally superior, and climate-smart cultivars to ensure sustainable pulse production and food security.
