Abstract

Soil is a dynamic system vital for plant development, water regulation, and nutrient renewal, purifying contaminants and supporting various organisms important for ecological stability. It acts as a medium for the interactions between organisms, air, water, and minerals. Grasping soil science requires a multidisciplinary method that combines chemistry, physics, biology, geology, ecology, and environmental science. In the 21st century, soil science's importance has escalated due to population growth, climate change, and urbanization, making sustainable management vital for ecosystem services, food security, and environmental health. Soil is key for carbon storage, sustainable agriculture, and climate change mitigation. The book deals with modern soil science principles, developments, and technologies such as nanotechnology and remote sensing, for students, educators, and decision-makers. It is focused on two principal branches: Pedology, the science of the origin and classification of the soil, and Edaphology, the science of the influence of the soil on plant growth. Furthermore, it includes six distinct branches: Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition, Soil Chemistry, Soil Physics, Soil Microbiology, Pedology, and Soil Conservation. Understanding soil science is very important for managing various environmental issues and also promoting sustainability, keeping in mind the importance of protecting soils.

Keywords
