Abstract

Genome editing has transformed crop improvement by making precise, efficient and targeted alteration of plant genomes possible. Advanced genome-editing tools, including zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), CRISPR/Cas systems, base editing and prime editing, have aided the development of crops with higher yield, better nutritional quality and enhanced resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Effective gene-delivery and plant-transformation methods enable the application of these technologies across diverse crop species. The responsible use of genome-edited crops depends not only on their agronomic advantages but also on biosafety and regulatory frameworks. Further developments in genome-editing technology are expected to accelerate precision breeding and contribute substantially to global food security, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.
