Acknowledging the source of materials is a fundamental aspect of medical scientific writing. This manuscript delves into the importance of acknowledging sources, differentiating it from citations, and categorizing acknowledgements into various types such as moral, financial, editorial, presentational, instrumental/technical, and conceptual support. It emphasizes the necessity of acknowledging sources to enhance the robustness of arguments, display academic honesty, and provide readers with references for deeper understanding. The manuscript also discusses what should be acknowledged, including quotations, paraphrases, information, and ideas, while distinguishing common knowledge that does not require acknowledgment. Various citation systems, including the Vancouver system and parenthetical referencing, are explored, along with the significance of attribution in copyright.
