Preface

Tremendous development in Plant science has made sea changes in crop improvement programmes in India as well as on global level. Right from pre-breeding, germplasm conservation, evaluation and documentation, marker assisted selection, varietal identification using DNA finger printing, along with a strong background of different class of seed production has enriched the Crop Improvement of Agricultural as well as Horticultural crops. This is further supported by various biotechnological applications such as Genetic Engineering tools, Plant Tissue Culture facilities,  Genome Wide Association mapping, advanced germplasm conservation techniques etc.,  Further, breeding for biotic and abiotic stress resistance with cooperation of Plant Protection and Crop physiology sciences; nutritional enhancement of high yielding crop varieties through Plant Biochemistry interventions are inevitable under present scenario of global Climate change. Therefore, integration of Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology is highly required for addressing global food security challenges.  As per ICAR Competitive Examination syllabi, Plant Sciences includes Plant Breeding, Genetics, Cytogenetics, Seed Science and Technology, Plant Pathology and Agricultural Microbiology; while Plant Biotechnology includes Plant biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Crop Physiology. Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology go hand in hand in overall Crop Improvement domain. Both Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology encompass fundamentals of Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, Plant Breeding, Molecular Biology, Plant Tissue Culture as well as Plant Biotechnology.  Hence, the aspirants of Plant Sciences as well as Plant Biotechnology need to know the fundamental concepts of both the domains. Therefore, the efforts of the authors to bring a capsized Glossary of Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology is the need of the hour for preparing for either Plant Sciences or Plant Biotechnology or both.
